Dr. Delores Ijeoma Akano was born in Washington DC and raised in Nigeria by professional parents. She completed her bachelor’s degree from Howard University in Washington DC with a major in Chemistry and a minor in Mathematics. Dr. Akano completed her Medical School training at Ross University School of Medicine and Internal Medicine Residency training at St. Barnabas Medical Center in New Jersey.
As a practicing internal medicine physician with over 12 years experience, Dr. Akano remains extremely passionate about patient care. She enjoys the team-based approach to medicine alongside her colleagues across different specialties, treating severely sick patients with complicated conditions while providing excellent medical care to her patients. She is a member of several professional/medical organizations including American College of Physicians and Society of Hospitalist Medicine.
Dr. Akano participates in social activities and a member of charitable organizations such as the Nigerian Women Association of Georgia (NWAG), an organization that serves her local community as well as Nigeria through empowerment, cultural enrichment and education of women, youth and children thereby fostering togetherness and excellence in their collective pursuits. She is an active member of the Opuruiche Women of Atlanta, an organization that works in one accord with their spouses in the Orlu Regional Union Atlanta Inc. to support our families in the diaspora and at our native homeland. This organization also organizes, nurtures and educates our children with our traditions, culture and values.
Her passion, and commitment to serve her patients and her community has led to this moment as she hopes to encourage our youth, especially young girls and women to never give up despite the odds against them. Her greatest joys come from spending quality time with her family.
