Dr. Obinna Nwabugo Akano, a practicing optometrist in New York earned his Doctor of Optometry degree (OD) from Imo State University, Nigeria. He also earned a Masters in Public Health (MPH) from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, New York and a Doctorate in Public Health (specialization in Epidemiology) from SUNY Downstate Medical Center. New York. Dr. Akano has a private practice in New York and is involved in research with areas of interest in clinical epidemiology, health disparities and social determinants of health. He is an ardent educator on the risk factor of diseases, disease prevention and health education. He is driven by the vast inequalities in health care access in underserved communities, hence his involvement in The Akano Foundation (TAF). Dr. Obinna Akano, a lover of custom and tradition is a native of Isu Ancient Kingdom in Nwangele, Imo State, Nigeria. He is a member of the New York State Optometry Association and the Delta Omega Public Health Honorary Society. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry.
