Dr. Ogonna Nwawka-Akano is a native of Nibo, Anambra State in Nigeria. Born in Nigeria and raised in several continents by a petroleum engineer father and a lawyer mother, Dr. Nwawka and her family moved to the United States in her adolescence. Since then, she has become a physician and completed subspecialty fellowship training. Dr. Nwawka is now a musculoskeletal radiologist at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York, a premier orthopedic hospital providing leading edge care for musculoskeletal conditions. Dr. Nwawka currently serves as the HSS division chief of musculoskeletal ultrasound as well as an associate professor of Radiology at Weill Cornell Medical College, New York.
Dr. Nwawka has particular clinical and research interest in brachial plexus and peripheral nerve imaging, regularly lecturing on these topics and contributing to nerve imaging literature. She is also principal investigator on several grant-funded studies on peripheral nerve imaging and musculoskeletal ultrasound. Dr. Nwawka’s experience with medical imaging strongly influences the charitable efforts undertaken by the Akano foundation. She hopes to leverage her expertise and professional relationships to improve access to education and healthcare in the developing world.
